“Hi my name is Leah Salmon The Naturally You Coach, I’m a best selling author, speaker, nutritionist & life coach, on a mission to help 100K black women to eat for health, think for happiness & live in harmony by 2020 or what I call becoming naturally you and welcome to another episode of my podcast Naturally You Radio

Today we’re focusing on how we can think for happiness by Making life changes sound more positive and compelling by calling them a

Break, cleanse or reset, rather than a ban

Typically, a life change that involves giving up something we are in some way addicted to like cigarettes, alcohol, sugar, gluten, dairy, a sedentary lifestyle are done to create a healthy lifestyle, but are seen and feel like a form of punishment for being bad, undisciplined, naughty, lazy, gluttonous or weak.

Whether any of that is true or not, being banned from doing something as a punishment instead of a making a decision to take a positive step in the right direction, have 2 completely different energies.

I remember when I first realised our children were telly addicts, because I’d allowed them to watch too much TV and they took every chance they could to be in front of a screen, when I wanted then to have no TV time for a while , I firstly had to take responsibility for their over indulgence, which meant that it wasn’t their fault, so why should it be PUNISHED with it.

They weren’t going to like having less screen time, just as we don’t like having to give up our favourite unhealthful habits, but there’s nothing but negative energy around saying “You’re banned from TV and screens”

It conjures up guilt, shame, blame, lack of control, stress, depravation, unfairness and can make co operation a burden and a chore you’re being forced into

It felt so much better to tell the children “listen you lovely little people, we’ve been spending a lot of time in front of the box when there’s so much creative fun stuff you can be doing elsewhere so we’re going to have a screen cleanse to have a break from it all for a few days, weeks, months etc, and in the meantime you can XYZ!!!!

They weren’t happy about it of course, but the energy I came with was such that it allowed discussion, didn’t point the finger, make anyone feel bad and gave them something to look forward to by making it out to be what it was, A Positive Thing

I found that dealing with myself and other adults like this is just as effective.

Instead of saying “ok Leah, you’ve been a naughty naughty girl and now you’re banned from eating anything remotely tasty as a punishment for the rest of your natural born life because you’re completely undisciplined and frankly a danger to yourself”

Now I start my writing at least 10 reasons why my decided life change is going t positively impact my life, then the internal conversation is more like “Ok hun, you can do this, we’re just going to take a little break from XYZ for a few days, weeks or months, in the meantime you can still enjoy all these others things , but the break, cleanse or reset will do some much for you, so lets do this”

And when things become challenging, I use a common techniques used with drug addicts who are detoxing, which is to say, “ok, I know I want to eat this now, but I’m just going to have a break from it for today, then tomorrow, we’ll see what happens”

And very honestly, tomorrow we do see what happens.

There’s no lie of you can definitely have it tomorrow if that’s not the plan, but if you can get through just one day at a time, it’s much easier for you to deal with than you have 30 days or 2 months or a year left, just get through the day.

Every day you get through, especially with support, make it easier to get through the next day and the next and the next.

So remember, make it more positive and compelling by calling your life change a Break, cleanse or reset rather than a ban

And if you want to break, cleanse or reset some area of your life naturally and with support, you can find out about the naturally You 30 day reset program I have at www.thenaturallyyoucoach.com/30dayreset
